When Will I Need to See a Cardiologist?
Your GP will refer you to a cardiologist if they have concerns about your heart. Some of the typical symptoms that will lead to a referral include:
- Chest pains
- Heart murmurs
- Hypertension (uncontrolled blood pressure)
- Arrhythmia (heart palpitations or a heartbeat that is too slow or too fast)
- Heart failure
You may also be referred to a cardiologist if you have multiple high-risk factors for heart disease including high cholesterol, or a family history of coronary disease, and need specialist advice to help lower your risk.
What Diagnostic Tests are available?
The tests we will use depend on your symptoms and medical history. Your consultant will advise you on diagnostic tests during your consultation. Depending on your complaint, you may be offered one or more of the following tests:
- Blood tests
- 12 lead electrocardiogram (ECG)
- Exercise treadmill test
- Heart rhythm or blood pressure monitoring
- Chest X-ray
- Electrocardiogram (ECG)
- Echocardiogram
- Cardiac CT
- Cardiac MRI
- Coronary Angiography
Upon the completion of your tests, you will meet with your consultant to discuss the results. At this point, they may suggest further tests, recommend lifestyle changes or prescribe medicine to help improve your symptoms and reduce risk of further problems.
