Cataract Surgery

What Does Cataract Surgery Involve?

Cataract surgery involves making a small incision in the eye and removing the eye’s natural lens. The surgeon replaces your cloudy lens with an acrylic one, which is called an intraocular lens (or implant). This lens may be for distance only, or, occasionally, a multifocal lens may be used. A multifocal lens corrects both near and distance vision but is not suitable for everyone.

The surgery is done as a Day Case and is carried out under a local anaesthetic. After the surgery, you should be able to go home in a few hours, but you won’t be able to drive yourself. You must arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home.

How Will Cataract Surgery Improve Your Eyesight?

After surgery, your vision will still be a little blurry for a few days – this is entirely normal. You will be required to use eye drops after the operation, and a post-operation examination will determine how long this course of treatment will be required.

Once this subsides, your vision will have improved – colours will be brighter, your vision will be clearer, and everyday activities such as reading and driving should be no problem. Because the implanted lens cannot focus at different distances, you may need glasses for near vision or distance vision (or both), but this is a small price to pay for drastically improved eyesight.

Are There Any Risks?

Thousands of cataract operations are performed in the UK every year, and the complication rate is very low. Major complications occur in just 1 in 1,000 cases. In the rare event of a complication, Hillsborough Private Clinic will ensure you receive prompt treatment with an eye specialist.
