What Will Happen at Your Hearing Check?
Most patients will have two meetings with an audiologist. The first will be to diagnose your problem and select a solution, and the second will be a follow-up appointment for the fitting of your new hearing aid (if needed). Your hearing check will consist of the following steps:- History Evaluation – Your audiologist will ask you about your hearing and how it has changed. You may be asked to provide details about the situations in which you find your hearing is diminished. For example, many patients have problems when listening to music, in conversations, or on the telephone. It is not uncommon for patients to have problems in one scenario, and be fine in another.
- Otoscopic Observation – Your audiologist will use an otoscope to examine your outer ear, ear canal and tympanic membrane (or ear drum) to look for problems.
- Audiometric Evaluation – In this evaluation, you will listen to a range of sounds and state whether you can hear them or not. This reveals which sounds you have problems hearing, and at what volume.
