Snoring Surgery
Diagnosing Your Snoring Condition
When you visit the clinic for your first consultation, you will have an initial examination, at which time your physician will likely give you a Nasendoscopy. A thin, flexible tube will be passed through one of your nostrils, down into your throat. This tube has a telescope on it allowing your doctor to see what is happening inside.
The procedure is slightly uncomfortable but is the fastest and easiest way of getting a quick and effective diagnosis. You will not be able to have any food or drink for an hour after the procedure, but there should be no long-term ill effects.
Once the examination has been completed, your consultant will assess whether you need to undergo a sleep study to determine if you have Sleep Apnoea Syndrome.
Your consultant will then discuss the likely causes of your snoring, which may include:
- Obesity
- Large tonsils
- Nasal blockage
- Floppy palate
- Small jaw
- Large tongue
Treating Your Snoring Condition
Your treatment will be tailored to the cause of your snoring. Potential treatments include:
- Weight loss
- Nasal surgery to correct a blockage
- CAUP (Coblation Assisted UvuloPalatoplasty) – a Norwegian surgical technique used to shorten and stiffen your palate
- Removal of adenoids and tonsils
