Snoring Surgery

Diagnosing Your Snoring Condition

When you visit the clinic for your first consultation, you will have an initial examination, at which time your physician will likely give you a Nasendoscopy. A thin, flexible tube will be passed through one of your nostrils, down into your throat. This tube has a telescope on it allowing your doctor to see what is happening inside.

The procedure is slightly uncomfortable but is the fastest and easiest way of getting a quick and effective diagnosis. You will not be able to have any food or drink for an hour after the procedure, but there should be no long-term ill effects.

Once the examination has been completed, your consultant will assess whether you need to undergo a sleep study to determine if you have Sleep Apnoea Syndrome.

Your consultant will then discuss the likely causes of your snoring, which may include:

  • Obesity
  • Large tonsils
  • Nasal blockage
  • Floppy palate
  • Small jaw
  • Large tongue

Treating Your Snoring Condition

Your treatment will be tailored to the cause of your snoring. Potential treatments include:

  • Weight loss
  • Nasal surgery to correct a blockage
  • CAUP (Coblation Assisted UvuloPalatoplasty) – a Norwegian surgical technique used to shorten and stiffen your palate
  • Removal of adenoids and tonsils

Gynaecology

When Should I Visit A Gynaecologist?

There is no wrong time to visit a gynaecologist; you should book a consultation any time you are concerned about your gynaecological health. It is better to book an appointment and be in the all-clear than to risk missing an opportunity for an early diagnosis.

We particularly recommend booking a visit if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms.

  • Pain in your lower abdomen (below your belly button)
  • Unusual vaginal bleeding
  • Menstrual problems, including heavy or irregular periods
  • Passing urine more frequently
  • If you experience pain during sex

We will diagnose your condition using one or more of the following procedures:

  • Abdominal scan
  • Vaginal ultrasound scan
  • Hysteroscopy
  • Vaginal swabs
  • Cervical smear

We also recommend you visit a gynaecologist if you are considering having a baby, or if you believe you are starting the menopause. Your consultant will help you stay healthy and reduce your risk of developing problems at every stage of your life. Sometimes this will require lifestyle changes, which your gynaecologist can advise on.

What Treatments do We Provide?

We offer a broad range of treatments including hysteroscopy, coil insertion, endometrial biopsy, and excision of skin cysts, tags, warts and smear tests.

Our clinic has full access to state-of-the-art theatres and can offer a full range of surgical procedures off site, including vaginal repair, hysterectomy, laparoscopy, and balloon ablation. Additionally, some of our consultants offer advanced keyhole procedures, including day-case hysterectomy (with or without ovary removal) and mesh pelvic floor repairs.

  • Vaccinations – GPs help protect you and your family with vaccinations, particularly in childhood, or if you are going on holiday. Our clinic provides routine childhood vaccinations (such as meningitis and MMR), optional vaccines (such as flu and hepatitis B), and vaccines for holidays (including typhoid, cholera, and tuberculosis).
  • Routine Medicals – GPs can assess your general fitness levels and check for health issues. A regular checkup can help determine a particular problem even when you feel fine. Your GP can also provide advice on health, diet, and fitness, or perform a medical examination that may be required for a job.
  • Sexual Health – Your GP can help with any sexual health issues you encounter or questions you have. This includes contraception, concerns about sexually transmitted infections (STIs), pregnancy planning and sexual problems.
  • Assessments and Diagnostics – Your GP is your main contact for healthcare enquiries, and it is their job to make sure you get the treatment you need. In many cases, your GP will make an initial diagnosis and then refer you to one of our consultants for specialist treatment. Unlike consultants, who you may only see occasionally, your GP is someone you and your family will see regularly.

Additionally, your GP also deals with occupational health, cryotherapy, preventative medicine, acute medical care, prescriptions, and many other areas. Because of their broad general knowledge, your GP serves as an important link between you and other healthcare services.

Gastroenterology

What Symptoms Indicate a Gastrointestinal Problem?

Most gastrointestinal problems, such as Crohn’s disease (an inflammation of the intestines), irritable bowel syndrome, and Coeliac disease (an inability to process gluten) will cause multiple symptoms. You should book an appointment if you are experiencing one or more of the following:

  • Rectal bleeding
  • Loss of appetite, weight, or energy
  • Hard to control bowel movements or a change in bowel habits
  • Vomiting or diarrhoea
  • Abdominal pain, bloating, or excessive gas
  • Heartburn

<Get Relief Today>

How will my Problem be Diagnosed?

Hillsborough Private Clinic’s consultant gastroenterologists will ask about your symptoms and perform an examination, often with the aid of one or more of the following diagnostic procedures:

  • Colonoscopy
  • Sigmoidoscopy
  • Abdominal scan
  • Blood tests
  • Food allergy testing
  • Oesophago-gastro-duodenoscopy

Once your results have been returned, your consultant will either provide a diagnosis or order further tests. You will be given a chance to discuss the results with your consultant and ask questions at any point in the process.

Once the diagnosis has been determined, you will be offered the most effective treatment, which could be surgical or medicinal. In some cases, such as with Coeliac disease, you will also be offered advice on lifestyle changes that will provide relief and help you manage your condition. In cases where more than one viable treatment option is available, you will be advised and can then ask questions to decide which one is right for you.

Referrals can be made to Ms Marion O’Connor, our Specialist Dietitian who can advise on dietary support in gastrointestinal problems.

Our clinic has access to a state-of-the-art theatre and radiology facility and also performs common treatments including oesophageal dilatation, polyp cauterisation and removal, and biopsies.

Foot (Podiatric) Surgery

Which Foot Conditions Can We Correct With Surgery?

When you visit our clinic, your surgeon will perform an examination to determine what treatment you require. We can correct the following conditions:

Bunions

A bunion will cause your big toe joint to become misaligned. In the early stages, this can be managed with padding, insoles, and appropriate footwear. If you have tried these methods but have not had any success, surgery may be the best option for your needs.

Arthritis of the Big Toe

Sufferers will frequently experience both pain and stiffness in their big toe joint. Your joint can be remodelled, or a part removed, to reduce the pain that you experience.

Hammer Toes

This common deformity results in your three middle toes becoming permanently bent due to arthritis, bunions, a foot injury, or poorly fitting shoes. Once the condition becomes severe, surgery is the only option. Your surgeon will remove a small piece of bone so that your toes can lie flat once again.

Pain on the Ball of the Foot and Morton’s Neuroma Surgery

If you have pain on the ball of the foot, you may be suffering from Morton’s neuroma, also known as Morton’s metatarsalgia, a condition where a nerve in the foot becomes irritated and extremely painful. Morton’s neuroma surgery is a procedure carried out to remove the part of the damaged nerve or to take the pressure off the nerve by creating the space surrounding it.

Ingrown Toenails

Severely ingrown toenails may require surgery. Your surgeon will partially or completely remove your toenail to correct the problem.

Toe Amputations

A toe amputation is a surgery to remove problematic toe(s). This operation is done as a day case at Hillsborough Private Clinic.

Ganglion and Cyst Surgery

A ganglion cyst is a fluid-filled noncancerous lump that usually develops in the wrist, hands, ankles, or feet. When a ganglion cyst presses on a nerve, it can be painful or/ and restrict movement. At Hillsborough Private Clinic, ganglion cyst removal is performed under local anaesthesia.

Cortisone Injections for Arthritis, Foot, and Heel Pain

Cortisone injections can be used effectively to treat arthritis or joint pain in the foot or ankle. Cortisone injections can help ease the pain and inflammation.

ENT

<Contact us to Book Your Consultation>

When Should You See an ENT Specialist?

You should always see an ENT specialist for serious ear, nose, or throat problems. If you are experiencing one or more of the following symptoms, we highly recommend you book a consultation as soon as possible:

Ear infections and other ailments

You should visit a member of our team if you are experiencing pain in your inner ear, or have an ear infection. If an ear infection is left undiagnosed and untreated, it could worsen and eventually lead to serious hearing loss. Other signs you should see a specialist are a ringing sound in your ear (tinnitus), or problems with balance, which normally indicate an ear problem.

Other treatments available at Hillsborough Private Clinic include dewaxing ears, drainage of middle ear glue, and grommet insertion.

If a child suffers from recurrent ear infections or an adult cannot hear, vents may be needed and can be inserted also at the Clinic.

Problems that affect your throat

The occasional sore throat is rarely anything to worry about, but if the condition persists, or you experience pain when you are talking or eating, you might have an infection or another serious problem. Treatments include tonsillectomy for recurrent tonsillitis/sore throats. Visit your ENT specialist for diagnosis and treatment.

Conditions that affect your nose

Problems with your sinuses and nasal cavity can affect your sense of taste, smell, and breathing. An infected sinus can also cause severe headaches and facial pain.

Other treatments we provide include nasal cautery, the removal of foreign bodies, cautery of nasal turbinates and snoring surgery.
