Snoring is simply a vibration in our throats while we sleep, which is caused by a narrowing of the upper parts of our airway. Many of us may snore occasionally, but if you or your partner’s snoring is leading to sleepless nights, then you should consider seeing your locally-based Consultant ENT Surgeon at Hillsborough Private Clinic.
Snoring has been linked to obstructed breathing, or Sleep Apnoea Syndrome, a more serious condition in which you regularly stop breathing while you sleep. This occurs when the narrowing of your airway is causing a severe blockage in your breathing. Sleep Apnoea can increase your risk of obesity, heart attack, stroke, heart failure, and diabetes.
Diagnosing Your Snoring Condition
When you visit the clinic for your first consultation, you will have an initial examination, at which time your physician will likely give you a Nasendoscopy. A thin, flexible tube will be passed through one of your nostrils, down into your throat. This tube has a telescope on it allowing your doctor to see what is happening inside.
The procedure is slightly uncomfortable but is the fastest and easiest way of getting a quick and effective diagnosis. You will not be able to have any food or drink for an hour after the procedure, but there should be no long-term ill effects.
Once the examination has been completed, your consultant will assess whether you need to undergo a sleep study to determine if you have Sleep Apnoea Syndrome.
Your consultant will then discuss the likely causes of your snoring, which may include:
- Obesity
- Large tonsils
- Nasal blockage
- Floppy palate
- Small jaw
- Large tongue
Treating Your Snoring Condition
Your treatment will be tailored to the cause of your snoring. Potential treatments include:
- Weight loss
- Nasal surgery to correct a blockage
- CAUP (Coblation Assisted UvuloPalatoplasty) – a Norwegian surgical technique used to shorten and stiffen your palate
- Removal of adenoids and tonsils
