When your body is in pain, it is a sign that something is wrong. Unfortunately, it is often the case (particularly with chronic diseases) that the pain isn’t a one-time message – it’s a constant, debilitating reminder that some part of your body needs extra care.

The most common pains we experience are acute pains, which only last for a short period of time. For example, if you have ever broken a bone, you experienced acute pain. This type of pain is relieved when the problem is treated, and is typically managed by taking prescribed painkillers like Paracetamol and Codeine, or anti-inflammatory medication like Ibuprofen.

Chronic pain lasts for three months or longer and isn’t always relieved when you receive treatment for the underlying problem. Without adequate management, chronic pain can lead to anxiety and depression, and even interrupted sleep. Patients with chronic pain are sometimes unable to work or participate in normal hobbies and activities, which can create a sense of isolation.

The consultant anaesthetists at Hillsborough Private Clinic can help you manage your pain so it doesn’t become the focus of your life or hinder your daily activities.
